Why do Kundalini Yoga? We live in a pressurized time that pushes our delicate human nervous systems that were not designed to remain in a constant state of stress. We see our nervous systems short circuiting when we overreact to situations, or are demanding with others instead of going with the flow. Our cultural mindset of productivity and action encourages us to push and compete to get what we desire. Without tools for self-care we can live in a reactive state experiencing life as a string of transaction-based exchanges constantly searching outside ourselves instead of being in control of our destiny. Kundalini Yoga is an easily accessible technology to bring health and balance to the mind and body at all ages and abilities.
Kundalini Yoga uses powerful breathwork and postures to heal the nervous system, and flush the glandular system to wake up our creative life force, called the Kundalini energy, to find innovative solutions to life’s challenges. This powerful combination of practices builds strong healthy bodies, develops mental focus, taps into our imagination, and provides a grounded foundation to connect to others with compassion and calm. Furthermore with its variety of exercises and modifications it is easily accessible for beginners with deepening complexity for more advanced practitioners. How does it work? Through movement, breath, mantra, and meditation, Kundalini Yoga practices remove blocks that keep us from being the whole vibrant being that is our birth right. A typical class starts with centering the breath to access prana, our life force energy. Kundalini Yoga exercises activate energy through the spine with repetitive movements that create heat in the body, called tapas. This heat relaxes the body to open up our energy channels and our awareness. The spine is both the super-highway of our nervous system, and the central channel of our consciousness. Kundalini postures, called asanas, help us regulate our nervous system, creating more bandwidth; so when we feel stressed, we connect to who we really are and choose how we want to interact with the world, not just react. Why chant? Kundalini classes often incorporate music and mantra with the exercises. How do you feel when you sing? Or when you hear a song that blows the doors open to the pain or joy in your heart? Music changes our mood. Mantra creates a focus for the mind; the sound current makes us more receptive. It shifts our energy to deeply feel and bring a healing vibration guiding us back into a state of wholeness. Participation with chanting is not required. It is simply offered as a tool to support the experience. Is Kundalini Yoga for beginners? Sometimes we are reluctant to try yoga because in the west it is associated with pretzel postures and spandex. Beginners often find Kundalini Yoga easily accessible as there are many modifications, and the variety of exercises in each class allows students to keep up. Benefits reported by Kundalini Yoga students include reduced stress, increased energy, improved digestion, improved sleep, and an increased sense of self-empowerment. Why not give it a try?
